Science Standards and Benchmarks
High School (Grades 9-12)
Earth | Life | Physical
Earth and Space:

ES9/12-1 Understands basic features of the Earth

ES9/12-1-1 Understands heat and energy transfer in and out of the atmosphere and its involvement in weather and climate (e.g. radiation, conduction, convection/advection)

ES9/12-2 Understands basic Earth processes

ES9/12-2-1 Understands the concept of plate tectonics and the evidence that supports it (including structural, geophysical and paleontological evidence)

ES9/12-3 Understands essential ideas about the composition and structure of the universe and the Earth’s place in it.

ES9/12-3-1 Knows the ongoing processes involved in star formation and destruction (e.g., stars condense out of clouds of molecules of the lightest elements; nuclear fusion of light elements into heavier ones occurs in the stars’ extremely hot, dense cores, releasing great amounts of energy; some stars eventually explode, producing clouds of material from which new stars and planets condense)

Life Science:

LS9/12-4 Knows about the diversity and unity that characterizes life

LS9/12-4-1 Knows how DNA and protein sequences are used to infer evolutionary relationships among organisms and to classify organisms.

LS9/12-5 Understands the genetic basis for the transfer of biological characteristics from one generation to the next

LS9/12-5-1 Understands Mendel’s laws of heredity (e.g., segregation and independent assortment)

LS9/12-6 Knows the general structure and functions of cells in organisms.

LS9/12-6-1 Understands the process of cell division (e.g., mitosis and meiosis) and cell differentiation

LS9/12-7 Understands how species depend on one another and on the environment for survival.

LS9/12-7-1 Knows ways in which humans can alter the equilibrium in ecosystems, causing effects (e.g., human population growth, technology, and consumption; human destruction of habitats through direct harvesting, pollution, and atmospheric changes)

LS9/12-8 Understands the cycling of matter and flow of energy through the living environment

LS9/12-8-1 Knows that as matter and energy flow through different levels of organization in living systems and between living systems and the physical environment, chemical elements (e.g., carbon, nitrogen) are recombined in different ways.

Physical Science:

PS9/12-9 Understands basic concepts about the structure and properties of matter

PS9/12-9-1 Uses chemical formulas and balanced equations to quantify relationships between reactants and products in chemical reactions (e.g., synthesis, decomposition, replacement, combustion) and to predict the products of a reaction

PS9/12-10 Understands energy types, sources, and conversions, and their relationship to heat and temperature

PS9/12-10-1 Understands the distinction between kinetic and potential energy

PS9/12-11 Understands motion and the principles that explain it

PS9/12-11-1 Knows that laws of motion can be used to determine the effects of forces on the motion of objects. (e.g., objects change their motion only when a net force is applied; whenever one object exerts force on another, a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction is exerted on the first object; the magnitude of the change in motion can be calculated using the relationship F=ma, which is independent of the nature of force)

PS9/12-12 Knows the kinds of forces that exist between objects and within atoms

PS9/12-12-1 Understands general concepts related to gravitational force (e.g., every object exerts gravitational force on every other object; this force depends on the mass of the objects and their distance from one another)

PS9/12-13 Understands the nature of scientific inquiry

PS9/12-13-1 Designs and conducts scientific investigations (i.e., formulates testable hypothesis; identifies and clarifies the method, controls, and variables; organizes, displays, and analyzes data; revises methods, explanations, and hypotheses; presents the results; and receives critical responses from others)
