Food for Thought
A Box Full of Kisses
The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3 year old daughter for wasting a
roll of gold wrapping paper.
Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put
under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father
the next morning and said, “This is for you, Daddy.” He was embarrassed by his earlier
overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty. He yelled at
her, “Don’t you know that when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be
something inside it?” The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said,
“Oh, Daddy, it is not empty. I blew kisses into the box. All for you Daddy. “The father
was crushed. He put his arms around his little girls, and he begged for her forgiveness.
It is told that the man kept that gold box by his bed for years and whenever he was
discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who
had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us, as humans, have been given a gold container filled
with unconditional love and kisses from our children, friends, family and God. There
is no more precious possession anyone could hold.
You now have the choice, you can...
1. Pass this on to your friends
Or
2. Throw it and act like it didn’t touch your heart.

About The Counselor

I was born in Bar Harbor, Maine where my dad was stationed in the Navy. Shortly after we moved back to Iowa
where I have spent all but 1 year of my life. I graduated from West Liberty High School in 1963 and received
by B.A. degree from Morningside College in May of 1967. Mr. Harold Blair and the Everly Community School gave
me my first job May of 1967. After my first three years in Everly I decided to try the state of Minnesota.
After a year I moved back and was hired by the Ida Grove school district August 1971. In the fall of 1973 I
returned to Everly and have been here since that time.
Over the years in education I have coached, football, basketball, baseball, softball, golf and been in charge
of our little league summer program. Teaching assignments have included social studies, physical education,
and 7th grade reading. In the summer of 1975 I completed my master’s degree in Counseling from South Dakota
State University and was hired as the high school Guidance Counselor at Everly. A few years later I completed
course work to certify me as an elementary counselor, a position I held until elementary was moved to Royal.
Somewhere in these years I went back to school and obtained my Principals endorsement from Drake University,
and later my Driver Education endorsement from Wayne State College. In addition to this, for many years I
have been a bus driver for the district, a position I share with Mr. Peterson, an English teacher at the high
school.
My wife Nancy and I have lived in Everly the entire time I have been a teacher in this system. Nancy has been
employed by Spencer hospital for the past 30 years. Both my sons graduated from this school and then Iowa State
University. We are the proud grandparents of 2 boys and a girl to be. In my leisure time I enjoy being with my
grandchildren, golfing (if I can find the time) controlling the TV channel changer and attending Iowa Hawkeye
football games. Everly is home to me. I continue to enjoy coming to work every day.

Stress On Our Children
What kinds of stress are our children exposed to each day as they get out of bed
and head for a new day of school? What happens after school to cause stress?
Is stress a real problem today? Maybe not. We all know the pressures of adults,
but have we considered what that does to our young people?
How are our young people growing up today? Are they growing up too fast? If so,
why? Are we, as parents, requiring too much too fast? Sometimes I believe so.
At times I think some of our children are being robbed of their childhood.
Teaching responsibility is one thing, making them responsible for too much is
something else. I wonder if we ask too much too soon. Life expectancy for
kindergarten age is reaching the 100 year mark. Maybe we should allow more time
to grow up, not less time. With alcoholism and suicide rate being much too high
among the teenage population one has to question the direction our society is
taking. As parents I wonder if we are willing to do battle and help our young
people grow up with proper supervision, or do we just throw up our hands and say
“do whatever, I don’t have the time or energy to be a parent.”
At times I wonder how many young people are expected to fulfill adult
responsibilities. I wonder if adults are not willing to except their
responsibilities. What are your children expected to do when they get home from
school? Can they be children or are they expected to be adults before their
time? Something to think about.
