Promoting Literacy & Family Fun
The Clay Central Everly "Promoting Literacy & Family Fun" Night was held on Thursday, April 8th in Royal. Over 100 adults and students participated in this event. The families gathered for supper.

To start off the evening a special award was given to honor Marlin and Marcia Gustin. They received the 2010 Anne Richardson local RIF volunteer award. Next Mr. Montgomery talked to the parents about our Positively Maverick Youth organization. The officers for this year are President, Teresa Schoelerman, Vice President, Denice Schoelerman, and Secretary/Teasurer, Rebecca Goeken.

After the presentation, the families were split into small groups and traveled through four centers. The first center was the RIF Reading room. In this session the families met Herman the Worm. While chewing their bubble gum and playing with their yo-yo's they learned that Herman the Worm was about to eat his brother, sister, mother and father. There was lots of laughter and giggles as Herman burped up his family and all was well! Marlin and Marcia Gustin reminded them to visit their town libraries in Royal and Everly. The families were reminded of the importance of reading at home daily and the children then chose a free RIF book.

In the second session the families made and ate delicious "Dirt Cups" topped with sugar coated worms. In the third session they decorated and planted "Spring Flower Cups". In the last center the children played games in the gym while the parents attended a first aide session. The CCE nurse visited with the parents about first aide for children. They received a handout on CPR, choking techniques and other first aide information. The family night was sponsored by the Clay Central Everly Elementary Staff and Positively Maverick Youth organization.
