Class Room Expectations
"The greatest discovery
of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by
altering his attitudes of mind."
-William James,
(1842-1910)
1. Come to class with a positive
attitude toward learning.
2. Be attentive & courteous to the
teacher and your classmates.
3. Be prepared for class with your
supplies & homework completed.
Grading
"The secret of joy in
work is contained in one word - excellence. To know how to do
something well is to enjoy it."
-Pearl Buck
(1892-1973), The Joy of Children, 1964
75% of the reading grade comes from
classwork
(Tests & Quizzes are
weighted 40%, Classwork/Homework at 35%)
25% of the reading grade is based on the
student's independent reading
(Assessed through the
Accelerated Reader Program)
Late Work
"Perhaps the most
valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do
the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like
it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and
however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last
lesson that he learns thoroughly."
-Thomas H. Huxley
(1825-1895)
Students who come to class unprepared
(due to unfinished - incomplete work) will be sent to "Late Work
Study Hall" during Guided Study Hall. The student is expected
to complete the assignment during this time, or work on the next
day's assignment. The late assignment will receive no higher
than a "D". If the same assignment is late more than one day,
it will receive and "F", but still must be completed.
Late work due to illness will not be
docked. I give students anywhere from 1 day to a week to
complete work, depending on the severity of the illness and how many
days missed.
Cheating
"People grow through
experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This
is how character is built."
-Eleanor Roosevelt
(1884-1962), My Day
Students caught cheating receive a
zero for that assignment and a detention. During
detention time, the student will write a letter of apology to
his/her parents incorporating recognition of the pitfalls of
cheating and an assurance that it will not happen again.
