·Literary Skills & Comprehension taught through selected works which may include novels:

The Giver by Lois Lowry

Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor

Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt

 

·Accelerated Reader (Encourages independent reading; Individualized program based on each student's ability - Students read novels of their choice and reading level; then test comprehension through computerized testing)

 

·Oral Reading Fluency

 

·Vocabulary Development

 

We begin each quarter reading a class novel together (2-4 weeks).  This usually requires students to read the remainder of a chapter each evening as a homework assignment.

 

The remainder of the quarter is focused on nonfiction / technical reading, poetry, oral reading fluency, and specific skills (such as finding the main idea; reading and following directions, locating information, drawing conclusions / inferencing, etc.)
