6th Grade Reading Curriculum

·Poetry

 

·Nonfiction/Technical Reading

 

·Literary Skills & Comprehension taught through selected works which may include novels such as:

Big Red by Jim Kjelgaard

Sing Down the Moon by Scott O'Dell

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare

Missing May by Cynthia Rylant

The Twenty-One Balloons by William Pene du Bois

 

·Recognize and interpret elements of literature such as:

Characters, Setting, Topic, Conflict, Resolution, Purpose, Theme, and Mood

 

·Accelerated Reader (encourages independent reading; Individualized program based on each student's ability - students read novels of their choice and reading level; then test comprehension through computerized testing)

 

·Oral reading fluency

 

·Vocabulary Development

 

We begin each quarter reading a class novel together (2-4 weeks).  This usually requires students to read the remainder of a chapter each evening as a homework assignment.

 

The remainder of the quarter is focused on nonfiction/techincal reading, poetry, oral reading fluency, and specific skills (such as finding the main idea; reading and following directions, locating information, drawing conclusions/inferencing, etc.)
